Khon Kaen University Alumnus Honored with French Distinction

The Faculty of Architecture at Khon Kaen University extends its heartfelt congratulations to Apichatpong Weerasethakul, an alumnus of the Faculty’s first graduating class. On June 10, 2026, Jean-Claude Poimboeuf, the Ambassador of France to Thailand, presided over a ceremony at the French Residence in Bangkok to bestow the Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour)—France’s highest order of merit—upon the acclaimed Thai film director.

A Distinguished Career in Contemporary Cinema

Apichatpong Weerasethakul holds the distinction of being the first Thai and Southeast Asian director to be awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 for his film, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Furthermore, he received the Prix du Jury (Jury Prize) at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for his work, Memoria.

As a renowned film director, visual artist, and a pivotal figure in contemporary art cinema, Apichatpong has made significant contributions to the international arts and cultural landscape. His work is widely acclaimed for its influence on the global contemporary cultural scene, while his career has played a vital role in inspiring and nurturing a new generation of Thai filmmakers.
